Blood and Bronze

Well, I've written my second-and-a-half game. Like Harlequin I competed in the Iron Game Chef , which is an annual-ish contest to design a role-playing game under certain constraints. This year they gave would-be designers a week, provided a theme, ingredients (choose 3 of 5), and a design limitation.

I floated around ideas a for a couple days after they released the info, with nothing really inspiring. Had a teaser of an idea on Wednesday, brainstormed it into a functional game on Thursday, and did 90% of the actual writing in the airport or on the plane home Friday.

Here is the result.

Let me know what you think. Would you play this? Is there enough spark there for me to move it to playtesting and actual development, or is it unispiring?

How can you tell I'm in Toronto? I'm posting every day. Hotels with unlimited internet access are cool. And also fairly common, unless you happen to be staying in Estevan, Saskatchewan. Not that I'm bitter, or anything.

I went to see Star Wars III: Well That About Wraps It Up For Vader last night. I was completely blown away! I quite literally wandered away in a daze, mildly shocked. The ticket cost $4.25.

Four dollars and twenty-five cents! Can you believe it? I don't think I've been to a movie in the last DECADE that was under five bucks. I don't think even the cheapo theatres in Edmonton are that low, and this was a first run movie.

The movie was OK, too. Not disappointing, not earth-shattering. I liked Hayden's acting better than I expected to, but that's about it. The lightsabre fights were fast and flashy and stuff, but all things considered, I think I like the Ep I duel with Maul better.

When I left Edmonton yesterday, it was ~15 degrees and raining nicely. When I arrived in Toronto it was ~15 degrees and raining nicely. I knew I was in the right place, however, because about 30 seconds after touchdown I could wring out my shirt from the humidity.

Toronto, we hates it, my precious, yessss.

Actually, today is much better, as it stopped raining but is still overcast and cool, which means it takes most of the 10 minute walk to my class for the humidity to get to me. The building is nice and air conditioned though, as is the hotel at the other end, so I'm surviving.

Last time I was in Toronto, we drove and drove and drove trying to find a hotel, and finally when with something expensive and swank-ish right by the lakeshore, because it was - literally - the only hotel we'd seen. Next time I will know better, and head straight for the airport, where all the hotels in the city cluster together like rugby players heading into a scrum. If I blindly threw a rock from my window, I would hit a hotel guaranteed, and probably another one on the first bounce.

More about Toronto tomorrow.

This coming Saturday (long weekend) I will be stuck at home with the kids in the evening. I still have a craving for Game of Thrones, and am inviting folks over to play it. Davyd, you're welcome to come to - if not, may I borrow your Game of Thrones? Else I'll have to go buy it or something...

Also, I've recently been accused of not just lollybloggery, but *boring* lollyblogger. I was told that if one must leave their blog unattended, it is only polite to leave it on something interesting to read or at least some sort of cliffhanger. And, to quote, "Lyle Lovett just doesn't cut it, babe."

I'm not sure that's necessarily a good thing. I mean, the last cliffhanger I left someone at involved gunshot wounds.
